FAQ

Everything You Need to Know About Diving with Us

Dive Trips

  • Do you need to be certified to join a dive charter?

    • You must be certified to dive on one of our dive charters, however we have options for non-certified divers. We offer PADI scuba certification courses and the Discover Scuba Diving course on our Private Charters.  Learn more here.
    • If there is space available, we can take friends and family of divers out with us as a snorkeler or ride-along. Please call to inquire.

  • Do you offer certification courses?

Yes, we offer private PADI scuba certification courses. Because our scuba certifications are private, your course will be customized to you - ensuring that you get the care and attention needed to excel as a new diver! We do not mix students with certified divers (unless you are in a group of friends or family members and want to dive together).

  • Do you allow snorkelers to join dive trips?

We do, if there is space available. Please call to inquire.

  • What kind of scuba equipment do you have in your rental department?

All of our rental equipment is top of the line, new gear from Atomic Aquatics (regulators), Zeagle (BCs), Oceanic (dive computers), and Bare (wetsuits). The gear is sanitized according to CDC and DAN recommendations after every use to keep our divers safe.

  • Do you offer Nitrox tanks?

    • Yes, we offer Nitrox tanks for Nitrox certified divers.
    • If you are not Nitrox certified, we can add a Nitrox certification course to any of our dive charters.
    • If you would like to try Nitrox, but aren’t ready to commit to the Nitrox Certification Course, we can offer an Intro to Nitrox course for you to try it.

  • How soon in advance should I book my dives?

During the busy season (summertime and mid December-mid January) we recommend booking at least 2-4 weeks in advance.

During the off season (fall and spring) we recommend booking at least a week in advance.

  • I haven’t dove in a while, do you offer refresher dives?

Depending on how long it has been since your last dive, we have a few different recommendations:

    • If it has been less than 3 years since your last dive we can provide a more thorough dive briefing to refresh your memory and answer any questions you may have.
    • If it has been more than 3 years, we may recommend hiring a private dive guide to conduct a refresher dive with you on your first dive. This would include a very thorough briefing and a refresher on some of the skills to ensure your safety.
    • If it has been more than 5 years since your last dive we recommend a private guide for your first day of diving with us. Call for details.

  • How long are the dives?

The dives are as long as your tank lasts! We do not cut our divers short and allow everyone on board to dive their full tank. That means, if one diver runs low on air before the rest of the group, we will send them up for their safety stop while the rest of the group keeps diving. The dive guide will stay below the diver going up and make sure that they get back on board safely before leaving the area.

  • How many divers are on board?

We take a maximum of 6 divers.

  • Can I book online?

  • How much should I tip?

Scuba tours are part of the service industry - in the U.S. it is customary to tip around 20%. Your dive guides and captain work incredibly hard to give you the best and safest dive experience possible and greatly appreciate your tips!

The Boat

  • Do you have a head (toilet) on board?

We do not have a head on board, however there is a public restroom at our harbor, and we can drop the ladder anytime you need to go to the “big blue loo” ! With two ladders on the boat (bow and stern) there is plenty of opportunity to use it privately.

  • Do you have storage on the boat?

Yes, we have plenty of storage on board for dive gear and personal belongings, including a completely dry area for car keys, phones, etc.

  • I am a photographer, is there a freshwater rinse for my camera on board?

Yes, we have 2 large freshwater rinse bins built into the deck of the boat to rinse and store cameras safely in.

  • I brought my own gear, is there somewhere to rinse gear after the dives?

Yes, you may use one of our hoses at the boat washdown stations to rinse your gear after diving.

  • Do you offer gear storage if I am diving multiple days with you?

We can store your BC and regulator, but ask that you take all soft gear (wetsuit, mask, fins) with you each day.

  • What sort of safety features do you have on board?

Our boat is equipped with all the Coast Guard required safety gear including: life jackets, VHF radio, EPIRB, flares, fire extinguishers, large first-aid kit, medical grade oxygen, and an AED.

  • What sort of comfort features do you have on board?

Our vessel has a large shaded back deck with two comfortable benches that are a great place to relax while in transit to our dive sites and between dives. While we are rated to carry 12 passengers, we only take a maximum of 6 to ensure that there is plenty of space on board for everyone. We have a hot water shower, we provide fresh local fruit, vegan banana muffins and water. Our boat is equipped with a cutting edge stabilization system that reduces pitch and roll for a more comfortable and stable ride.

Local Conditions

  • What is the water temperature?

The water temperature is around 75°F (23.8°C) in the winter and 80°F (26.6°C) in the summer.

  • What is the average visibility?

We typically have very good visibility ranging from 75 to 100+ feet.

  • What is the best time to go diving in Hawaii?

Diving in Hawaii is fantastic year round. We do not have a specific season where the weather is better or worse as we can get storms any time during the year that can affect diving. There are humpback whales here during the winter months (December-March), we often see them from the boat and hear them singing while diving! However, the water and air temperatures are warmer in the summer.

  • When are the humpback whales in Hawaii?

    December-March

  • Is the water rough? Will I get seasick?

Our trade winds pick up most days around noon, which is why we like to get an early start. Sometimes the ride back can be a little bumpy due to wind chop, but our vessel is equipped with a stabilization system to reduce pitch and roll for a smoother ride. If you are prone to seasickness we recommend taking medication for it before diving.Call for details and suggestions.

  • Is there anywhere on the island I can’t go after diving due to elevation?

Yes! Hawaii island is a tall volcanic island, meaning there are many areas that have high elevations that you should not go immediately after diving. Do not drive up Saddle Rd (7000 feet), to the summit of Mauna Kea (14,000 feet), or to Volcano National Park (7000 feet) within at least 18 hours after your last dive.

Transportation

  • Do you offer transportation from the resorts?

We do not offer transportation to and from the resorts as we are a small team! The Kawaihae South Harbor is very close to the Waikoloa resort area, only 15-20 minutes depending on what resort you are staying in. There are taxis and (sometimes) Uber/Lyft available to bring you to/from the harbor.

  • Is there parking at the harbor?

Yes, there is a large parking lot with free parking at our harbor.

  • What is the nearest airport? Hotels?

The nearest airport is the Kona Airport (35 minutes to the harbor) and the closest resorts are in Waikoloa. Other places to stay that are close by are Waimea, South Kohala, North Kohala, and North Kona.
